DIY knife

I recently decided that I needed a new knife. I thought about saving a little cash and picking up a nice Spyderco or Benchmade. Then I changed my mind and decided that I had enough folding knives so what I really needed was a fixed blade. Finally I changed my mind again and thought I might as well try to make my own fixed blade knife. I did a little research and it looked like a project I might actually be able to pull off. So here's my first very simple knife project. It was basically a practice run, but I'm pleasantly surprised by the results.

Found an old saw blade in the garage.

Cut out the rough shape and some work with a file.

Start the handle

It's not a fun project unless you bleed

Put some brass pins in the handle and epoxy it all together

The finished product.

Now I can't wait to make more.

That is some very nice work you have done and using use an existing hole worked a charm. What did you use to cut it out with? I see a few more knives in the left over blade. :)
When the big picture is to big, look for a point you can start at and build from there.

I used a dremel and several cut off wheels. That is some very tough steel to cut. I started another blade tonight using the other half of the saw blade. I plan to take a little more time with this one and try a couple new things.

That knife looks great mate! Wish I had the tools to make one myself. My dad keeps talking about making a forge and using it to make our own knives, I believe I'll show him this as it looks much simpler than trying to melt steel lol

What a great job!  That is something I've been considering for years but shelved the idea because I couldn't find any old blades made of the good steel.  Glad to see that someone I know attempted it and pulled it off nicely.  I think once I get my belt sander I will try my hand with a file knife. ;)

Nice work!

Just a note to those following in your footsteps, though: the diamond shaped part around the hole in the sawblade is a deliberate knockout... (in other words, if you set a bolt on it and whack it with a hammer, the diamond shaped part magically falls out).

Oh man...that is wicked cool!

My son would freak out...he always wants to use those saws all blades to make knives...never thought of using old wore out circular saw blades!

Do you heat treat or temper them at all once done

How strong is the steel, will it stay sharp or dull quickly?

Hi.

When hunting and skinning.
The best general Skinning blade I had. was a home made one.
Buff's Cattle. Goats.

Power Hacksaw blade from engineering shop.
Break off length you want.
and profile it. then start with a slow coarse grind and drum of water.
Eventually you have profile.
Make the hole end of blade, the hilt. It's VERY hard to drill
Laser cut if avail.

I then grind the  bevel and  face of blade.
Polish on Diamond plates.
there is a bloke in States. sells Exotic timber for hilts. some already treated and cut for each side.

Drill holes to suit hole in blade.
Epoxy the 2 pieces to hilt. Rivet.
File to shape and polish up.

First 2 we just dipped in rubber vats for hilts.
 Shooting mate worked in Tyre factory.

This was all around 45\50 yrs ago.
But blades still avail and make great skinning curves.

Lighter, narrower,, not so deep blades
 would make smaller styles of knife.
And there are a massive range of timber bolsters avail from that bloke.
 from $25 up. In many sizes.

That steel. Hard to work with. But. Slow and patient.
Make the best steel for holding edge and working with.
Just don't grind fast enuff to take temper out of it OK.
Coarse grinding wheel slow speed. lotsa water.

You want to be exotic.
There used to be Japanese. Damascus blanks avail a few yrs ago.
Maybe????. Still.

I've made a coupla Kitchen knives on the old forge.
and folded old files.
Bloody sloooow work.
But come out alright. Good steel.
