Title: TFF Custom 14500 Light Giveaway. Rule change in OP.
Post by: MRsDNF on August 10, 2014, 05:34:02 AM
This giveaway is open to all TFF members that have signed up before this thread was started. It will close sometime in the future. l will announce the date a few days before it closes. Winner will be selected by random.org (http://www.random.org/). Rules can be changed at any time by me.

EDIT. Rule change one.
If you were a member of TFF before this thread was started your first post will automatically give you four entries to the giveaway which I will document by number which will be your ticket numbers. New members joining up will receive one entry to the giveaway which I will also document your ticket number. These will be recorded in the first post.

Its simple, like me, to enter. Just post here in this thread anything you like. A picture, joke or whatever takes your fancy. You can post as many times as you like but only your first post will count for the contest.

This giveaway was first floated along time ago and I'm sure spas had given up on me. I cant say l blame him. Machining started about eight months ago and finished this weekend.

The first picture is a shot of all the components less an errant o'ring.

The tailcap holds a reverse switch.

The reflector is 20.5mm in diameter which is protected by whats supposed to be an AR lens. Led is an XPG-2 3C on a copper star driven by a two mode 7135 2.2 amp driver. This will need an IMR 14500 battery for best results. 2.2 amps was chosen more for a practical point rather than having a thirty second hot rod flashlight if it was running 3 + amps. Bezel is 100% brass and was a real bugger to knurl.

Yes it even works right at this point in time.  :)

Head and tailstands are no problem.

A shot to give you an idea of the size, its not a small light by some AA standards, and to show it really is a handy light.

And finally after a long photoshoot between rain clouds it was time for a nap.

Over to you guys. my work is nearly done.  :D

Wow, what an incredible light Steve she is a stunner.

Thanks so much Steve for the awesome giveaway, whoever wins this should treasure it immensely as it's a totally unique light made by a light building genius (he will deny that all day long though) and a very very rare opportunity to actually own a Hand Made MRsDNF flashlight  8)

Wow that is one fantastic light!!

Man gets a room in a hotel. He notices that the sink faucet is dripping.

He call the front desk and says "I've got a leak in the sink".

The clerk replies "Go ahead sir, the customer's always right."

Thanks for the chance!!

Very sweat light, is this one also made out of a piece of bike handlebar?
Man I need a lathe, not that I could do that, I just want to be able to eventually make my own light-every single part from scratch, that's must make you feel accomplished. Congrats on both of those beauties.

Thanks so much for doing this, Steve. Giving us a chance to win one of your incredible creations is surely appreciated! She is a beaut!!!

Oh wow...the knurling is superb!

Excellent, and thanks!

Would you be willing to supplement a OSHPark Direct Driver (custom made for TFF of course) with multiple modes vs just 2 modes?
What is the diameter of the driver?  17mm?  I currently have a 15mm upsized to 17mm that might fit the bill if interested

https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/jRpEIU7P
Very easy to change the silkscreen
(https://644db4de3505c40a0444-327723bce298e3ff5813fb42baeefbaa.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/uploads/project/top_image/jRpEIU7P/i.png).(https://644db4de3505c40a0444-327723bce298e3ff5813fb42baeefbaa.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/uploads/project/bottom_image/jRpEIU7P/i.png)

I also have a 15mm 7135 I designed for the SK68 (running at 1750ma 5*7135)...also can very easily upsize it to 17mm

Come to think of it...I think I see a way to make the + pad a via...and be able to make the C1 connected between BAT+ and - with minimal effort...hmm

Thats a very generous offer WH. The driver is 17mm but unfortunately I would be incapable of putting this together myself. But if your offering? ;)
Edit. Would not direct drive be to much for a 14500 battery? HKJ's testing only goes to 3 amps on the AW and Efest batteries. Maybe on a light with a larger battery would be more practical.

DD is no problem for the Efest's. The only sanyo's I have are protected and they trip at 4A but the little 2502 based FET drivers can't trip them, only ever seen them trip on my tester.

(http://i452.photobucket.com/albums/qq247/1badv8dime/Killer%20Lumens/9B740456-8D1E-4E20-B9F9-E1BA9B845185.jpg) (http://s452.photobucket.com/user/1badv8dime/media/Killer%20Lumens/9B740456-8D1E-4E20-B9F9-E1BA9B845185.jpg.html)

I vote for the Sk68 driver sized up, that way it's regulated.

Day late and a dollar short huh? Dangit! Would've loved getting in on this one. Nice light Steve!
An AW IMR14500 or MBI Nuke in IMR14500 might give best results, both are more capable than the Efest V2.

On these smaller FET's the current is somewhat lower than the really big ones...plus the beauty of the build is the firmware, can have the "wide open" (turbo) step back to a lower current level at whatever time frame you want, thus heavily reducing the current flow (thru PWM) to the emitter

would be able to give 5 levels if you wanted with a really nice moonlight mode for very long run times

I like the idea, especially letting WarHAwk build it (if thats the plan)

I like the idea of using an instant-start ramp back in turbo vs. one timed step down. It comes on at full power but then over the next 35 seconds ramps its self down (one PWM step at a time, you cant even see it) to high.

I can understand why the knurling on the head and bezel was so difficult, but it does look fantastic.  Great piece of work, WH.

Oh..not my build...I am in NO way that skilled, I was just offering to build a custom driver to make it have many more options

Thus an INCREDIBLE built flashlight host with a better than normal driver

CK...you have done alot more R&D on that compile...have you tweaked up the version I got from you before...I will build the driver if they want it, can you hook me up with the code you have come up with

And the ramping down from turbo to high is so subtle you can't really see it go from turbo to high....which is very very nice

I have taken WH up on his offer to supply a driver. The winner will have the choice of driver from AA, 7135 based driver or WH hotrod version.

sure I never got the ramp down to work with the timer, it starts right away but it's cleaned up from my first attempt and works great

whats your plan for an AA driver?

Should have joined a while ago. The chinese sellers have not invaded this forum yet.

I personally like the fet driver idea with moon, and turbo ramp down one PWM step at a time. But I would be just as happy to get the flashlight as a host, and fill it in myself.

Will this have the MRsDNF Signature in it? I think it would be better if it has because this light will be part of TFF's history as one of the sweetest (I need insulin) lights built by one of TFF's finest.

And if I win this, there will come a time when I'll have to enclose this in a glass case and place it together with my most treasured collections.

The first post has been updated with all the entrants so far. If you have one against your name I have taken it that you joined after the giveaway was announced and if you have four then you must be an old member. If you see any mistakes please let me know and I'll fix it up. Also if your names missing let me know. The draw will be this weekend coming or soon after. in other words it will end sometime soon.
Suncoaster has requested that if he wins to have a redraw. My rules deem there will be no redraw unless there is a bribe coming.  ;D

I should have a four next to my name as I joined TheFlashlightForum on August 10th, 2013.
I also had at least one post in the following thread back when this forum was known as TheFlashlightEmporium:

This giveaway was first floated along time ago and I'm sure spas had given up on me. I cant say l blame him. Machining started about eight months ago and finished this weekend.

The first picture is a shot of all the components less an errant o'ring.

Congratulations Johnny!! that's awesome bro  8)

Thank you so much Steve for your incredible generosity to the TFF community. I can't even begin to imagine how much time and effort goes into making a light like this from scratch.

It will certainly be loved and cherished in Johnny's home that's for sure.

Oh SNAP!!!   ;D ;D ;D

This is so freaking awesome!!  W00T!!  I've always wanted a piece of Steve's handmade awesomeness and now I'll have one!  I can't wait to feel its knurly knurls in my fingers.  This will be the pride of my collection and actually unseat Match's ceiling fan light for that place (pains me to say that).

Thanks so much for the contest, Steve!!!

Knowing how awesome this light is and how much everyone else wanted it too makes me actually feel a touch bad for depriving someone else of it.  For this reason I've just now decided it's time to clean up the work bench in the very near future and put together a light of my own for another giveaway of some MicroMag goodness.  I think I'll even follow Steve's lead with the contest rules. :D

And I'll try not to get too depressed

I'll do a full review of THAT driver as soon as she arrives!  Need to do a thorough stripdown and full input testing, check the high beams, and check the tension on the anode connection. ;)  I'll be sure to take lots of detailed pictures...no...make that videos!

Sorry Blinky the lights gone. JM hopes its on a big jet heading his way instead of the normal Cessna we use here.
As far as the knurling goes thanks for the comment. There is an element of luck here. If you run out of luck you resort to trick photography. Baring all that not working you see if you can machine the bad parts out. I'd give it away if I said which or all of the above happened with this light. ;)

Thanks for the kind comments guys. The light is on the larger size for a AA powered light but it did have a largish reflector and tailcap switch which all adds to the size.
