Title: What was the last flashlight you used and what was it used for?
Post by: JohnnyMac on July 30, 2016, 10:45:23 PM
I think it's fun to see what lights you all are using and how you use them day to day  So, what was the last light you used and how was it used?

The last time I used a flashlight was last night going to bed at 3am. I used my Vollsion SP-11S in low to get ready for bed without waking the wifey.

Used a Manker E11 to change the light bulb in the dryer. Handy little light. (http://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah211/SirHikesalot/20160805_180836_zpsch2mfocx.jpg)

This afternoon I used an Olight S15R with reversed clip on a cap as a headlight for checking the electric wiring in the house.

The Olight clips are a great and versatile design. Perfect for ball cap headlamps.

This evening I was at a party and used my Reylight Ti triple Nichia (part of my EDC rotation) as a yard sweeper to check out the back of the host's property.

Hikesalot, that drier pic is awesome!

Olight S15R... to light my way to the barn. I could have turned on the yard light but the S15R was clipped to my pocket as always. :)

Heh...I hear you guys.  Taking out the trash...any excuse.  I prefer to check the doors in the house every night via torch light instead of turning on the lights.  Then I make my way up to the bedroom and get ready to bed via torch light as well.  I always seem to come to bed far later than the wifey and a nice moon mode makes sure I can do it without disturbing her.

Mag solitaire led this afternoon looking inside a printer looking for a paper jam. Just the right level of light for that sort of job.

My UF-1504 (PC amber emitter from Mtn) at about 3am to figure out where the cat was barfing.
Didn't get up, just noted where not to step if I did need to get up any time before dawn ... back to sleep.
(The "back to sleep" part is why I have the amber light)

Heheh...yeah, I don't miss fixing those things.  I'd be writing every day that I used my Thrunite Ti HI to lock up the house and head up to bed.  Last evening I performed some testing in the basement for a couple of upcoming reviews.  Tested output levels of an Olight R50 and it's competitor, an Acebeam EC50 II.  Two visually similar lights with opposite personalities and performance.  Neither will make their claimed max output.  I will have to retest throw on the EC50 as it is FAR less than claimed  while the R50 is just a touch higher than claimed.  Judging by direct comparison of the two on a wall, I think I will get the same results.

ar about 2 in the morning, I just used a UniqueFire 1508 75 mm head AS lens lamp, with an IR emitter to illuminate a dark corner of a paddock below my house so I could use a McLellan Night vision device to see if there was soneone or something in the field with the horses.

The IR emitter is great, because it does not scare the horses and I can spot and light up an intruder without them knowing

THat sounds like a pretty sweet setup!  I need to get myself some night vision goggles and a bright IR light.

Wow!  That's some serious coin for a light.  I tried searching for "McLennan Marine Ltd Type IM101" and got zero returns on Google.  Post some pics of this intensifier so we can all check it out  :D

Iīm a police officer, and I have a Fenix MC11 attached to the lapel of my uniform. Itīs very handy, as it frees my hands from holding the flashlight, and I donīt even have to get it from the holster. Itīs probably the light I use the most in all sorts of "administrative" roles (like writing notes), and itīs also probably the light I used last.

Great place to clip a little light.  I don't wear lapels so I have a neck lanyard that I hang a AAA light from (usually my Thrunite Ti HI).  Hangs down for hands free use to light up the area just in front of me.  Easy to hold in my mouth when I need to aim it while working on stuff and I just release it when done and it falls back to my chest.  This, and your lapel location, are IMO the best places to carry an EDC light.  Of course I always try to have a bigger light clipped to my front pants pocket for those times when more is more.  ;)

I was out in back last night trying to figure out what was making the normally quiet squirrels in our big ass tree, be all agitated and noisy...very unusual.

First shined a BTU PK26 out back to the marsh area but it was too narrow, so I grabbed for the SF2200 w a bit of opaque lens...it lit it up very nicely and showed the visitor.

Male mink, working it's way from our woodpile to the area around the bird feeders, back to the woodpile and finally a quick scamper down to the tidal marsh area...man, was that cool, a first time sighting at night!  He did not seem concerned w the lit up yard at all...

(he had been a frequent summer visitor, seeming to enjoy PO'ng the local population of squirrels and just maybe a treeful of racous raccoons...good deal.)

Went to a football game yesterday, with the nitecore MH27, I put the blue strobe on in the car for a section of the road, some cars actually did slow down. Didn't get to the game any faster though :)

LOL!  Just be carefull with that blue strobe.  I've always wanted to try that but the fine is pretty hefty if caught.  My luck I'd do it to an off-duty or unmarked officer.  :D

Spent a week in the Eiffel with the missus. The path to the restaurant was a bit dim lit. So I used the Thorfire VG10 I bought for less than €12 at a sale on Amazon. And now it is my favorite EDC light.

Ummm just got it so I just shined it into my back yard and up into the trees and I heard some passers by say WTF was that (they didn't see me). Being its late, I just turned it off and went inside LOL.   Its now very old tech / old school but got this Coast HP21 for cheap so wanted to test it out.

I used my ROP'd 2C Mag to turn off my next door neighbors light sensing porch light....from about 250' away. lol

Later I used my 10D BrightStar to turn off the neighbor 3 doors downs' light sensing porch light. That 4-1/2" mirror shiney reflector throws the beam of a #258 bulb like it was shot out of a bazooka.

LOL!  That's awesome. You don't see many folks using ROP mags these days. Certainly something I'd like to add to my collection one day even if the newest LED throwers can top them. How far can it legitimately reach out?  I have a TN42 that can reach out a legit mile. Since that one I have little need for another thrower but an ROP mags sure would be fun to play with.

Johnny, I do not know the distance vs cd and all that. I can say that last summer while walking along the shore of a river bank at a dark campground on a cloudy night it was shining as far as the gasoline powered golf cart headlights that kept whizzing by me.

I lucked up and acquired an old school one with a custom made reflector (before those kadomains arrived), a clear glass borofloat, an upgraded switch assembly and a copper braid in the tailcap section. It has a lanyard ring/spacer to add a wee bit of length to the body so the tailcap closes down proper using 2 high ouptput 18650's inside a (Mag 2C) Delrin sleeve. The seller included 4 twin packs of hi/lo bulbs as well.
The crazy part? $65 shipped. I couldn't have built it for that. Heck 4 packs of bulbs (if you can find them) would be nearly that much these days.

I did some Mag ML25 IT incans with currently available stuff in an effort to keep them stock. Using a 2C platform with a 'natural gas' sized 3/4" section of pipe, a pair of gentle LifePo4 18500 solar light batteries and a 4 cell bi-pin gets about 200 lumens with no melting of the stock parts. So I did a 3C version with a pair of 1amp 18650's, same pipe and a Streamlight TL3 bulb. I cut off 1-1/3 coils of the spring to relieve the pressure on the batteries. That one melts the stock reflector ever-so-slightly near the bulb.
I did a full size 2C same as the 2C ML25 and it works great. With the larger reflector it throws well. The stock lens was for a krypton so there is a nice gap between the bi-pin and the lens. (Read: no melting).

Oh, in the ML's I use the slightly diffused acrylite lenses Chris started making for ML's at flash light lens dot com for a super nice, artifact free beam with no loss in output.

One day I asked him if he'd make me some glass for the new ML25's. He responded "you betcha" and added those sized lenses to his lineup. He sent me some acrylites while the glass was being made. Super nice for cool running lights, and using in 15 or so minute intervals have held up well in my hotwire'd ML25's. In my 3C ML the reflector melted near the bulb a bit but the lens is fine.

Alright, I'm way off topic, so btt... Today I used my PK Design Lab PR-1 on low, at a right angle near the floor to cause a shadow from the tiny screw I dropped while fixing the wife's eyeglasses.

Lately I'm working at night observing asphalt paving on a wagon trail that was discovered by civilization and is now a shortcut from Yupi-topia to the confines of their inner suburbian cubicle laden offices.

Tonight it was very foggy. Lately my trusty Coast HP7 and it's slightly blue tint beam has provided the correct tint for given situations where CRI is irrelevant, yet illumination of textures and flaws in the mat is a daunting experience with most of my flashlights. Being it is a zoomy it provides a spread of light, a pencil beam or somewhere in between as situations dictate.

In the thick fog a pencil beam was drilling a hole through the moisture to ID trees and wires in great detail so the trucks that deliver the asphalt to the job can raise a bed and know when to lower it before they rip something overhead down.

(http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag118/bykfixer/z%20flashlights/modern/IMAG0623_zps45j66q1b.jpg) (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/bykfixer/media/z%20flashlights/modern/IMAG0623_zps45j66q1b.jpg.html)
Case in point:
Floody lights or broad beam'd lights blind us in this dense fog as all of that moisture is lit up. In the photo a truck approaches a famous old maple tree at a famous old church (circa 1808) that if damaged would have us all doing some explaining.
