Title: What is your primary EDC light lately?
Post by: JohnnyMac on May 21, 2014, 11:18:36 PM
Most of us can be found with multiple flashlights on our person at any given time. What is your current primary/favorite EDC light and why?

Mine was my Olight S20 until I had the misfortune of losing it.  Now it's my Thrunite T10S. It's bright, has 3 perfect modes, no flashies, is reliable, and beautifully made from stainless steel.

I'm carrying my little police light that I put a nichia 219, East driver and orange peel reflector in. I also made it long enough to take a 14650.  It weighs next to nothing and has a nearly perfect beam. Everything in it was scavenged and I even got the batteries for free.

A little police light here as well. It used to be a 2x CR123 filament bulb (brightest torch in the world at the time) yeah right :P anyhow with a bit of work I converted it to a XP-G on copper 18650 zoomy.

It's by far my favourite light, it does what it say on the tin and it's built like a tank (nothing like the paper thin lights out there these days)

I'm carrying the eagletac d25c ti neutral.  I carried a peak logan with qtc for over a year, but the flickering/unreliable qtc always bugged me.  The d25c is very close in size, uses a driver to regulate output and has a clicky.

I'm carrying a Convoy S2 at the moment. XML2 5B1, AK-47 driver with two added 7135s and flashed with off-time Star firmware. And a pocket clip added.

This is my  EDC that I use at work inspecting vehicles. It runs on a puny 800 mA on high and 99% of its running is on medium which I cant remember the output of but its probably around 300 mA which is ample light for what I do.

I'm carrying a Trustfire Mini-02 on my keychain, which covers 90% of my outside tasks. It is currently modded with a neutral XP-G R5 (Awesome pure white tint, don't know exactly which one, but I like it, even if I'm more a warm white guy) and a 45 TIR optic. It still has stock driver, since I mostly use it on high with a CR123A battery, it is ok.
First I put a warm MC-E in it, but it was dedomed after a few months of use, and the dedoming killed 3 of the 4 dies :/

My "inside-EDC" is a Zebralight H31fc...but since I got my Spark SF3NW from the recent group buy, I'm starting to like it more and more (wasn't so happy with it at first).

These both lights cover 99% of my use. The last 1% is covered by some incan (nothing fancy, Chinese or Surefire bulb in various hosts), a Convoy S3 XM-L2 High CRI with stripped TIR, and a Surefire KX4D head on a Solarforce L2M body, with NiCd battery pack  8)
(if you know how to mod this Surefire head, help me please!)

My current edc is a cheap autozone light I picked up for $5.  I threw in a xpg2 on copper and optic. Then opened up the tube to fit a protected 14500. No driver 1 mode real simple and bright. Best thing is it was made of spare parts so if it gets lost or destroyed I won't be upset.

Right now in my pocket is a Thrunite Ti2, and on my keychain is a Trustfire Mini-01 with a XM-L2-4C mod.  :)

I am happy to have to update my EDC carry now.  After over 4-6 months of thinking I lost my Olight S20 forever I was working in one of the equipment cabinets at work 3 days ago when I felt something tug at my subconscious making me notice something out of the corner of my eye.  I looked up at the top of the cabinet and there, stuck to the metal with its magnet, was my precious S20!

  W00T!!!
Filled with joy I snatched it and ran my eyes over it then hit the power switch and rejoiced when she lit up like I remember her doing.  Battery still with it's charge and eager to shed light into the dim corners of my life once again.  Giving Spirit one more audible prayer of thanks, I clipped it back into my front pocket where it belonged, right next to the T10S that's been covering it's duties as my EDC in its absence.

Reunited and it feels so good! ;D ;D ;D

Hi guys first post here in TFF. I have been carrying Spark SF5 NW for about a week now. I really like the tint and and flexibility with both eneloop and 14500. I also just received the S2+ T6-4C from Simon and it is really great little tube light. Only 2-3 cm longer than the SF5 but as a plus it will provide longer runtime using 18650. I will swap the reflector with TIR in the future. Might win a crown as my EDC.

Welcome to the TFF family and congrats on your first post! :)

The Spark sounds nice. How low is the lowest mode? I have an S2 host on the way that I will be making a triple XP-G2 edc from with 1500 OTF lumens.  You're going to love yours.  4C is a great tint.  ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I'm still waiting for that TIR from FT. The lowest mode on Spark around 1lm according to manufacturer's specs. I think it is a bit high in real life but I have no way to know the actual number. Triple XP-G2 in S2 sounds really awesome! 1500 OTF lm? It must be really hot!  :D

1 lumen is a lot brighter than people think it is.  I prefer less than a half a lumen for moon low.  Even a tenth of a lumen is plenty bright.

Heat with triple XP-G2?  Damned straight but that's what low and medium are for.  With a Qlite driver I will have a moon low to make it perfect for EDC and a stunner. :D

Where are you located?  What size TIR are you waiting on?  I have a lot of 20mm TIR in different viewing angles.

Primary EDC, left front pocket I have an old beat up 1 mode SK68 with a 14500, and in my right pocket an old beat up convoy S5 running specialized STAR firmware

Then in my Maxpedition fatboy whatever I happen to grab from my desk and toss in there (along with my hidden SIG P6 :D)
(all my vaping stuff and other miscellaneous flashlights/spare Efest batts for my vaping rigs)

For th past several months it's been my triple XP-G2 S6 (2 r5 dedomed, 1 dome on S2 2B) and my highly customized nitecore D10 piston drive.

Used to the S6 was my main go to and the D10 my backup. With the most recent redesign of driver and totally new UI the roles have reversed- I use the D10 more (left front pocket) and the S6 is backup / when 700Lm isn't enough.

The D10 is infinitely adjustable from .5-700+ via ramping, level is memorized and there's all sorts of in UI configurable options and junk, it's the 4th iteration of driver and I think it's finally done, except maybe I'll just do that one more mod... (I would really like to put a TIR in it, I prefer major flood in my EDC)

Can you guys see the pic? First time hot linking to an image hosted on my site.

I sure can!  I can just make out the triple optics in the S6.  How big a difference does dedoming make in those Carlo optics?

Well the dedome wasn't intentional, when I first built it it was running @ 13A, I killed one emitter and burned the domes on the other too (technically it "killed" them too but only the domes were blackened, the die's were still good) so I replaced the totally dead one and dedomed the other 2.

It really cleaned up the beam, the TIR's caused artifacts threw the scattering effect, this is noticeable cause with the one dome on led there is 1/3 of the beam that has the artifacts (from the dome on S2) but the other 2/3's are clean. I need to swap all 3 out for dedomed XP-L's but the only ones I have left on hand are the ones donated by Illumn for my GAW lights so I can't use them for personal projects.

Thats the beauty of high level mods, you can have truly one of a kind stuff! (this is the UI I''m using on several new drivers, I just happen to demo it in my D10- the first light I got running with it)

Using a nickel plated Leaf 6P body with smoothie head and 24k gold plated tail/cren bezel and mcclicky.
It's running the cheapest, crappiest, dimmest "super brite" dropin on the market, but the light itself is absolutely stunning.

Also EDCing the NiWalker MiniMax 15 (Micro Tiny Monster)

I'm not set up for measuring output but pushing the button seems to trigger an uncontrollable grin.  ;D
I estimate 8-10min. run time on Efest IMR's. Long enough to get a "Oh my God!" from the muggles.  :o

My EDC is a C3 SS

Long time ago my first mod and modded again and again.

First was an Ultrafire Dropin dremeld to fit in,high mid low . High~ 3,3A

The result was great at this time:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea8GmpKjppc.

Later dremeld a 17mm driver to fit in the dropin. 2,8A @ high

Change the LED on cooper XML NW

Then we start to try dedoming and cut the dome with a knive.(Andi and me)
It was the first "dedomed" LED in  Germany.
Not perfect,but a few LUX more.. :) .

This flashlight is really old, but I like it cause of the reminders.

I  have 2 little AAA Moonlight, beside both beds $2.50 AUD the pr. Del.
perfect for night walkies. (Ordered 3. 2 worked).
Main work round home. an old Ultrafire 68. AA Batt. does 90% of work.
Walkabout. Usually my old well scratched Ultrafire again. S-R5 with XM-L hi?
18650.
Outside. a 4 x 18650.   9 x XM-L2  Sky-Ray King.
All cheap. All rear springs copper wire soldered.  None flickering
Plus all gave extra output.
Mates told me Buy at least ONE good one. They all have mainly. I'm just starting.

Apart from a coupla loong throwers.None of the up to $200+ torches perform better than mine.
Nicer looking. More complex innards.
I just like 20% 50% 100%.
or just straight 100%. on-off Fine.
Plus mine. in total. would give me change from$150 over 6 or 7 yrs.
I'd love a good torch. But old fart on Pension. It ain't gonna happen hey.  (NOT BEGGING, I wouldn't accept).
I just appreciate looking at the beautiful things.  Specially the copper and bronzed\shaded ones.
So keep putting up the photo's yes. Large size.for my old eyes. chuckle.

The Armytek Dobermann XP-L is the only cool white light of the bunch.  I tend to prefer neutral and warmer tints, and the Nichia 2119B is my absolutely favorite tint of all).

...like this Surefire 6P 18650 Oveready-bored body, with Solarforce A001 head, B2 stainless bezel, S20 stainless switch, and loaded wit a Sportac Triple Nichia 219B 2-mode drop-in).  This one is almost always carried in a bag, these days.

But, sometimes it's nice to have a high-powered cool white spotter, and this one works very well, and is built like a tank.

Olight s1 baton. Here, I have added my top favorite EDC flashlight list (https://tacticalflashlightguide.com/best-edc-flashlight-buying-advice/). I used these flashlights and really a few of them have impressive features.

Well, I have an obvious brand bias, but I really like the Nightstick TAC-560XL. I am currently experimenting with belt carry modalities. How do you guys like to EDC outside of the pocket?

I prefer to use a holster as shown. The hammer loop keeps it from swinging. The drop carry makes it easier to draw than a higher belt carry .  Good flashlight holsters are hard to come by. This one came with the Inova X4, the light immediately to the left. You can carry any of the shown lights in this holster.  As you can see it is old & worn.  The search is on for a new one, but so far I have come up empty.  The rubber band was added to adjust the "holding tension" for smaller lights. The sides of this holster are made with a flexible material so it will expand for the larger diameter lights.  I put the emitter end of Big Larry in first.

This type of holster allows me to change lights on the fly. Additional holsters not required.

Nowadays.
It's a JETBEAM Jet 1 MK Pro in my pocket at all times.
With either a S2+ XP hi, or a Sofurn C8T with XP Hi NW
on Walkabout.  Spare batt for both in L\H pocket.

Serious shorter term walkabout. I use a Imalent DN35
with 35 chip and 26650 battery,
Runs at 1400\1450 with 2200 for boost.
That one. For it's size has a nice kick to it.
Plenty of spread and ranges almost forever.
Waay past range of my old eyes.
When you look at what we were using 65\70 yrs ago.
(Apart from military searchlights)
the average $5 torch will out range\spread the best then avail.

You lot don't know how lucky you are nowadays. Not only with electronics.
When I was a kid. My grandma's house still had GAS Lights in the walls.
and out on the streets.
