Picked up a new camping knife
« on: February 18, 2016, 09:20:21 PM »
The other night I was at my local Walmart hoping to pick up a rifle case for my new AR15.  While they didn't have the case I wanted in stock, they did have a good selection of knives on clearance.  I found a Camillus Carnivore X2, a smaller version of the Camillus Carnivore machete that I already have.  It comes with a small, all stainless multitool knife that fits in a smaller holster on the outside of the main holster.

It's not in the picture above because the first thing I did was give the small knife a paracord wrap to make it more comfortable to use...

As for the main holster...garbage!  It is cheap nylon with a plastic insert to keep the knife from cutting through the nylon.  Plus the bright graphics aren't anything I want to wear around, even alone in the woods.  What's a DIY guy to do?  Make a new holster for the new toy, that's what!  I broke out the cowhide stash and leather tools and whipped up this...

I'm really happy with the new holster.  The big 8" knife slides right in with just the right tension to need a lock strap and there is no loud rattle like with the stock holster.

I decided to play with some artwork tooling for the first time.  While I'm not thrilled with the outcome it looks better than I thought it would at first considering the screw ups in it.  Word of advice, when tracing artwork into the leather, make sure you don't forget any of the lines, especially in something as intensive knotwork.  I removed the tracing only to see I missed a few critical lines and could not get the pattern back in the proper position perfectly.  I kept myself from scrapping the whole thing and I'm glad I did because it's not that bad unless you look at it close up.

While I was at it I grabbed some scraps and made a neck holster for the little knife.  Came out nicely even with my initials in it. :)

Anywho, I just thought I'd share my latest project.  Anyone else here aside from DBCstm that makes their own holsters for knives, guns, and/or lights?

Cheers!

Nice job on the sheaths that you made for your knives!!

I second that, solid work on the sheath! They look great.
